'Cry Babies' is a speculative fiction in the form of a mockumentary that addresses the relationship between education, society and violence.
In a world full of promises of success and high expectations for young people, a teenage girl breaks the norm and stars in an episode of violence in her high school. What pushes a young girl over the edge? What is the level of responsibility of the family, the school, technology, the pressure of the technology, the pressure of the established canons, the media, the politician who cuts back on education, precariousness, society or herself?
The show wonders what the future holds for today's youth. Through video vlogs, mock-up manipulations, musical numbers, body scores, humor with a trashy touch and interactions with the audience, we will remember that at seventeen the world was much more complex and terrible than we thought.
How should we deal with youth violence as a society?
The Followers is a company of young women from Barcelona created in 2018. It is formed by Andrea Monje and Laura Riera. All their works are of their own creation, from dramaturgy to direction, maintaining a feminist, emerging, political, vindicating and multidisciplinary perspective.
'Welcome to Siriʼs Party' was their first show, presented in work in progress format at the Rose Bruford Theater (2018, London) and at the Croquis Festival 2019 (Sala Beckett). In 2019 the production won the Bonnescèniques Grant (Centre de Cultura de Dones Francesca Bonnemaison) and premiered at Antic Teatre in Barcelona.
'Cry Babies' is their second project, with the co-production of Antic Teatre and Quinzena de Dansa Metropolitana, besides being selected in the Kinètic 2021 of the civic center Sandaru. They have participated in various festivals such as the 5th edition of the RBLS Festival in 2021 and the audiovisual festival Influx, also in the same year. In 2022 they performed at the Z Festival, a showcase of shows created by and for young people. The show is nominated for the XXIV Critics Awards.
They are currently preparing 'Frankenstein', their third piece, with the support of Cal Gras Avinyó, Antic Teatre and Estruch de Sabadell.
